Bio-based chemicals

Avantium has developed YXY – a family of green chemical compounds for the making of bio-based materials that can compete with traditional hydrocarbon derivatives on both price and performance.

Avantium is based in Amsterdam and was IPOed in March 2017.

Why We invested

Trend – Most of today chemicals are still petrol based, but more and more producer seek to develop more sustainable products driven by the “green” expectation of the end consumers.

Strengths – Leveraging it high throughput catalysis business, Avantium has developed  a unique process to produce the building block FDCA to commercialize the first 100% biobased polyester with blockbuster market potential in packaging materials for beverages and food.

Development thesis – Aster Capital is supporting Avantium to develop partnerships with industrial companies like Solvay but also with large brand owners like The Coca-Cola Company and Danone.
