Etogas Back to Portfolio

Smart grid-scale energy conversion

Etogas develops energy storage projects based on its power-to-gas technology, which converts green electricity into utility-grade CO2-neutral natural gas.

Etogas was created in 2009 as a spin-out of the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) in Stuttgart, Germany.

Why We invested

Trend – With the steadily increasing share of intermittent renewable power generation capacity electricity markets witness excess generation and low spot market prices. Energy storage can solve part of the problem but is limited in capacity and still expensive. The alternative is to convert excess low value electrical energy to hydrogen and synthetic methane by rapid response electrolysis and its subsequent injection into the gas distribution network where through which this clean renewable energy can be marketed in other markets than the electricity market. This concept is called Power-to-Gas.

Strenghts – Etogas has developed technology that meets the specific needs of the Power-to-Gas market

  • A pressurized alkaline electrolyser technology with rapid response capability – from zero to full-load in only few minutes
  • A compact, highly scalable and low-cost methanation reactor
  • A modular integrated plant concept that can address plant sizes from 0.5 to 50MW
  • The capability to perform detailed financial and engineering feasibility studies as a basis for obtaining project finance for Power-to-Gas projects internationally

Development thesis – Following Aster’s investment in the company, Etogas has successfully completed and put in operation the world’s largest Power-to-Gas plant for AUDI AG in Werlte/Germany and piloted its own technologies with Customers such as CVT in Germany and RAG in Austria. Aster is actively supporting Etogas in the development of further new Power-to-Gas projects in Europe and overseas.
